personality:

To start, the powers each Misfit character has shows a great deal about their inner personality and life view. Curtis is "gifted" with the ability to travel back in time and change history from the storm; his regrets regarding his drugs charge and later ban from sports rule his existence. When he eventually sells the power, Curtis has found a piece of joy and stability in his relationship with Nikki. That is shattered by her death, and he instead purchases a genderswap ability, claiming it was all that was left after his friends bought their own. Perhaps this is true, but it also reflects Curtis' discomfort with who he is as a person and the relationships he has with the women in his life. Of all the male Misfits characters, Curtis is probably the one who respects females the most and is least likely to use the power for nefarious, creepy purposes, but he still struggles with connecting on a deeper level with them, and that's what he really wants out of a relationship. However, I don't think this reflects any genderqueer tendencies in Curtis. He considers himself a male even when in his female form, though later admits to not really having a term for his sexuality as "Mel". His new power is a complication, and one he hasn't fully begun to understand despite initial explorations.

Curtis is the most socially respectable of his group of friends and he's very aware of it. His public service sentence is a fluke, and in the start he carries the opinion that the others are lesser people than himself. This is an opinion that eventually fades in the face of camaraderie and friendship, but never fully goes away. Curtis has an elevated sense of self-worth that he's quick to deny. After he's been shamed by his arrest and ban from sports, Curtis holds onto his past desperately. He has a lot of regrets and allows them to rule him more than is entirely healthy. Bizarrely, though, Curtis is the character with the fewest social ties. Even Simon, socially inept and dangerously lonely is shown attempting interaction with more people, whereas we have seen no one from Curtis' past but an ex-girlfriend, and only her when he's attempting to guiltlessly remove her from his new life.

He's vain, and that vanity runs deep. Curtis was once the best, headed for the Olympics and riding the high of success. His athleticism and attractiveness were the basis of his existence, and without them he flounders without any direction. This feeds into an ingrained selfishness that he has only recently become aware of. Everyone has problems, but deep inside Curtis thinks his are more important, and is quicker to act on his own behalf than the behalf of others. This doesn't mean he's not willing to fight for his friends, just that he's more motivated by saving his own skin. And it's an important distinction between his own skin and his pride. Curtis would rather be thought a coward than chance injury, and doesn't seem to hold the opinions of others to be as important as his own opinion of himself.

Very serious and stoic, Curtis tends to have the driest sense of humour in the group, and even that is only present when he does bother to show amusement. He's slow to warm up to anyone and even slower to advertise that affection, the exception being potential sexual partners. Curtis likes to flirt, and he's good at it. He's confident, calm and capable of charm. He likes being in relationships, as seen by his tendency to seek out girls after an initial sexual encounter. For example, Alisha is initially only looking for a little fun, Nicki information about her new power, and Emma a one night stand with someone who was once a hero, but they each become a focus of Curtis' attention. He doesn't take part in one night stands, and maintains high standards for his partners. He also doesn't seem to strike up friendships with males. Simon, Nathan and Rudy may be present during group social outings, but Curtis gives more attention to Kelly, Alisha, or whatever other date has tagged along. He simply seems to like them more.

It takes a lot to drive Curtis into a panic or ruffle his feathers. He's calm and collected except in extreme situations, which may include death, dismemberment, and murder. Nathan is usually capable of annoying him into friendly (or not-so-friendly) sniping, and in his absence Rudy does the job just as well, but otherwise Curtis is more likely to walk away from a situation than get frustrated with something. He does act in defense of Alisha at one point, striking and threatening Simon while under the impression he has assaulted his girlfriend, but is just as quick to back down and act rationally when it's clear something is amiss. Curtis is not naturally violent and tends to get annoyed and walk away from the unimportant things. He focuses on some distant finish line only visible in his own mind, and is willing to sacrifice pride or his social image to get there as quickly and painlessly as possible. Social interaction, at least with his friends, is sometimes treated as a chore.

Though Curtis has behaved in ways that are outside the usual Christian dogma, he seems to have a few moral hangups that the other do not. His tendency towards monogamous relationships, a reluctance to break the law (in comparison to his criminal cohorts, at least) and a habit of chastising others for being offensive are part of it, as well as the cross and saint medallion he's rarely seen without. At the very least he has some familiarity with Christianity, even if he does not fit the traditional image. It's also important to address that this morality does not extend to chastising homosexuality; not only does Curtis take part in a (sort of?) lesbian relationship in series 3, but he admonishes Alisha for a moment of homophobia in series one. Curtis has his own code of conduct, and it's a complicated one that is as much a strength as weakness. Apart from Simon, he's the least likely to initiate law-breaking, but he is also the most stubborn headed and slowest to agree that the law-breaking may be necessary.

In series three Curtis unravels quite a bit. He's adrift, single for the first time in a long time and working a job he has no enjoyment of. In an attempt to return to his usual stability and find a bit of enjoyment, he joins a girls track team. Curtis is not initially comfortable with his power and actually refuses to show his friends, and I think this is an allusion to his discomfort with who he is after having lost his career. It isn't until he begins an unusual relationship with Emma as both Curtis and Mel that some of his biggest flaws surface; his selfishness, his refusal to let go of the past, and his misunderstanding of what it means to be a woman. The change isn't immediate, but throughout the episode Curtis deals with certain facets of life he'd never given any thought to, including drugging and wariness around strange men, sexual harassment and multiple orgasms. There's a shift in him after all of that, and he becomes less absorbed in the past, lightening his regrets considerably. He learns to enjoy being alone again, and strengthens his respect for Kelly and Alisha.

abilities/powers: Curtis purchases the power to change his gender to female from the power dealer at the end of series two. His ability to shift into a female is instantaneous, painless and happens at will. Anyone watching will see Curtis as a male one moment, and then Curtis as a female less than a second later. Probably due to special effects budgeting, the transformation is not shown, but is clearly very fast.

His female form has all the working parts of a normal, healthy human female. It's also possible for him to become pregnant while in his female form, and he does indeed impregnate himself in 3x06. It's shorter and slighter than his male form, and it'd be safe to say he is probably physically stronger as a male. He certainly feels more comfortable in his natural gender, and after nearly being raped by his running coach as Mel he limits his ability use to only when in private or with trusted individuals.

first person sample: [ The camera blinks on and is steadily aimed at Curtis' face, the expression stuck in stony disdain. ] I want my shit back, you pricks. [ There's a crinkle of the paper gown as Curtis shifts, but he holds his gaze with the camera. ] My cross, my medallion, my own phone, my fucking pants.

And if you sick fucks have any damn decency, you'll give 'em a wash before you do. Rude to borrow someone's shit and then not bother to launder it. [ He flashes an insincere smile before the video feed swivels away across a gray blur of wall and ends. ]

third person sample: It's only ever been a problem when he's with the others. Days could go by between seeing them, work to flat to work, shopping or partying between without a single cop in sight. No, it's only when he's got his friends at his heels that the cops take notice, and this is no different. He half blamed Alisha for jinxing it, as if her thinking any of them could have a normal day together brunching without some other superpowered freak giving them trouble. And in front of the police, because how else would it go down?

This cop was clearly a racist dick, too, because he barely even hesitated before sprinting after Curtis rather than Simon or Kelly, like just because he's black he threw the fucking rock at his car. Well that was too goddamn bad for him, because it didn't take more than five seconds before Curtis was at his best, pelting down the street in the direction of anywhere but fucking here, the rush of panic in his head whipped away with adrenaline soaked speed. His legs, his arms, and his breathing all came together like a well oiled machine, and he had nearly a block of lead when he took a corner and came up short.

There was a gate standing in the way, and it was chained shut because of course, this is Curtis, unluckiest bastard in the whole fucking council. He shook it with a rush of violence anyway, and then half an idea formed before panic could take root again. When the panting cop came skidding around the corner, Curtis had already felt the weird shiver of power run through him. He turned, giving the officer his best attempt at a blank, innocent stare, hoping the softer features of his female self was enough to cancel out the really obvious fact he was still a black youth sporting the same tracksuit.

And it worked, so maybe he wasn't so unlucky, or maybe he was just smarter than an asshole in a uniform, but Curtis wasn't going to wait around to find out. With a glow of satisfaction as the cop gave his confused assent and rushed off after nothing, Curtis turned and walked the other way.

Not like his asshole friends could have gotten far. They didn't have the stamina for it.
